The Dance
Written by: John Cote

This melancholy tune
That you and I are waltzing to
Is a fine companion for my blues
The girl who opened up my heart
Just threw it back all ripped apart
And left me here to pick up all the pieces

I'm tired of this gloom
Just had to get out of my room
And step in here and shake out all my demons
The days they will be getting better
And someday soon I might forget her
But I sure could use a good distraction now

So while we have this dance
I will loose myself within it
And for a while pretend
That love is in the air

Because this is the home for battered hearts
It's a shelter for the lonely
It's an amusement ride where hopefuls stride
And life feels like the movies

You can feel safe in here
Wear your heart out on your sleeve
And let your problems all dissolve inside the dance
Inside the dance

I'm far too tempted to
Begin to fall in love with you
But I know you've got some baggage of your own
But the acquiescence in your breath
Your hair draped down upon my neck
Is all the affirmation I could need

I know all too well
That I'll be leaving empty handed
Don't need to know your name
Or how old you really are

Because this is the home for battered hearts
It's a shelter for the lonely
It's an amusement ride where hopefuls stride
And life feels like the movies

You can feel safe in here
Wear your heart out on your sleeve
And let your problems all dissolve inside the dance
Inside the dance

While we're taken by the moment
I can charm you around this room
But when the music has ended
You'll be leaving all too soon
all too soon
all too soon

So while we have this dance
I will loose myself within it
And for a while pretend
That love is in the air

Because this is the home for battered hearts
It's a shelter for the lonely
It's an amusement ride where hopefuls stride
And life feels like the movies

Until the midnight hour hits
You're my only Cinderella
So while the crystal slipper fits
Let's just loose ourselves in this waltz together
